4 Recipe Ideas for College Students

While being a college student is certainly a memorable and joyful experience, managing finances can be a challenging task for many. The struggle to juggle money between essentials and non-essentials is almost universal, and food is one of the major expenses for college students around the world. Luckily, if you have the will and motivation to save money on restaurant take-outs and pizza deliveries, you can cook some delicious meals on a budget while living in a college dorm.

Most dorms come with a furnished common kitchen or cooking area, and a majority of dorms allow students to keep electronics like mini-refrigerators, microwave ovens, electric kettles, and toasters or sandwich makers. If you correctly use the appliances at your disposal, you can make great meals and save money while eating healthy, self-cooked food. Here are some recipe ideas that college students can easily make in a college dorm.

Mug Mac ‘n’ Cheese

If you have a microwave in your dorm room or kitchen facility, you can easily make one portion of macaroni and cheese in a mug. Take half a cup of macaroni and fill it with half a cup of water. Add a pinch of salt and microwave for two to three minutes, or until the pasta is tender.

Add a splash of milk, a few pinches of pepper, and 1/4th cup of grated cheese and microwave for another 30 seconds after mixing with a spoon. There you have it, a tasty macaroni and cheese meal in a mug, perfect for one.

Mug Cake

When you’re itching for a dessert, and no place seems to deliver to your dorm, mug cake might be the thing you need. You can make this simple dessert in - you guessed it - a mug! Just add 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder, 3 tablespoons of powdered sugar, ½ pinch each of baking soda and baking powder, 2 tablespoons of milk, 1 tablespoon of butter, and ½ teaspoon of vanilla essence to a regular coffee mug.

Mix the ingredients thoroughly and microwave for 1-2 minutes on high power, while checking with a knife or toothpick to see if it has cooked. Add your favorite chocolate on top, and you have in your hands one of the best-tasting desserts that you can make in the comfort of your dorm room. Getting the ingredients once during your grocery trips will last you a few months and yield tens of mouthwatering mug cakes.

Breakfast Egg Muffin

If you’re looking for a quick and easy breakfast to eat before you run to your classes for the day, look no further. The microwave breakfast muffin packs the right amount of energy to kickstart your day, and you don’t need to have more than three ingredients for it to work. Mix one egg in a mug with salt and pepper to taste, and microwave it for 30-40 seconds after covering it with a wet paper towel.

Take an English Muffin and place the egg between the two halves to make a delicious sandwich. For a more nutritious version of the sandwich, consider putting some greens on top of the egg, for example, tomato slices, lettuce, spinach, or a vegetable of your choice. There isn’t a better way to start your day!

Dorm Nachos

Whether it is a laid-back night of watching your favorite movie with a friend, or a dorm Superbowl viewing party, these nachos are the perfect snack to eat. Take a bag of nachos and spread them on a microwave-safe plate. Then layer salsa and shredded cheese according to preference, and microwave the nachos for 1 minute, or till the cheese starts to bubble. Enjoy these dorm nachos with your choice of drink!
